Something more about the Award
INTERNATIONL AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Philosophy of the Award
The philosophy is neither very profound nor very complicated. It is simply this: a civilized society depends upon the freedom, responsibility, Intelligence and standard of behavior of its individual members, and if society is to continue to be civilized, each succeeding generation must learn to value those qualities and standards…..Above all, it depends on a willingness among the younger generation to find out for themselves the factors, which contribute to freedom, responsibility, intelligence and standard of behavior. These are all abstract concepts. The Award Program has attempted to bring them down to earth; to give individual young people the opportunity to discover these ideas for themselves through a graduated program of experience.
CHALLENGING YOUNG PEOPLE EVERYWHERE
Mission Statement

The Gold Award
Pinnacle of the Program
The International Award for Young people, India is an exciting youth development program designed to equip participants with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their community and the Nation.
The Award is open to young people between the ages 14 -25 years, regardless of their social background. Participants are assessed on personal achievement as grown from their original circumstances, and capacity for growth
To qualify for Gold Award, participants are required to complete a balanced program of non-competitive activity, grouped under 5 Sections over a minimum period of 18 months.
To build a sound healthy body, playing both individual and team sports.
Encouraging development of personal interest and practical skills .
Learning how to give meaningful service to those in need understand interdependence within every community.
Encouraging a spirit of adventure and discovery both of self and the environment.
To initiate or undertake a Project that will benefit the Community, while living in unfamiliar surroundings. This includes learning to appreciate other’s circumstances.
Skills
Skills development Gold participants are as varied as young people themselves. Participants choose a skill to develop over a minimum of 18 months. Whether it is classical dance, or the nuances of photography, to learn riding/ grooming a horse, or the intricacies of computer hardware, this section develops life skill that will continue to serve young people through life.
Physical Recreation
IAYP/India encourages young people to develop healthy bodies through Physical Recreation. In an age where computers and television entice sedentary habit, here is an opportunity to develop mental and physical stamina, and to gain in perseverance and confidence in their physical capability.
Adventurous Journey
This is perhaps the most popular section in the Program. Gold participants embark on an expedition or exploration, for a minimum of four days and three nights. Here they enjoy the challenge of pushing physical limits, while developing grit, determination and self/reliance together with the ability to work in tandem with others to overcome obstacles and build bonds of friendship with others.
Service to the community
Participants in the Gold program commit to serving the Community for a minimum of one year. By tending to the needs of others, young people develop sensitivity to the needs of the Community, and develop into caring and compassionate individuals. They learn the joy of giving of themselves, rather then dishing out charity. Many Gold holders continue to serve the Community well after receiving their Award.
Residential Project
With the confidence and ability developed through the Gold Program required to initiate or undertake a Project that benefits less fortunate compatriots. The projects expose young people to a range of society and environmental issues, and broaden their worldview. It helps build character and maturity, and the ability to cope with adverse circumstances.
Adult Volunteers /Award Leaders
The factor that has proved wonderfully inspiring and immeasurably valuable was the inclusion of adult volunteers. In no other program have there been so many older people reaching out and sharing expertise, in bee keeping or astronomy, woodwork, basketry and railways, thus building bridges between the generations. Young people are given the opportunity to interact with adult who were neither parents nor teachers. Today, no one can say how many adults, worldwide, are involved in the scheme, but hundreds of thousands would be a modest estimate. A “Spiders Web of Involvement” grew and spread, as the possibilities dawned on those that took part.
In the Founders words: “The Scheme is intended to help both the young and those people who take an interest in their welfares. It is designed as a challenge to the individual to personal achievement, and as a guide to those people and organizations who are concerned about our future citizens.”
